Tings To Do On The Out Island Of Eleuthera Bahamas

BEACHES...BEACHES...BEACHES...for swimming & snorkeling. Rainbow Bay Beach is a few steps across the street if you are renting the Key Lime Cottage. Rainbow Beach is one of the best, accessible beaches on the island, with beautiful Caribbean-side, turquoise water. There are numerous other beaches up and down the 102-mile stretch of Eleuthera Bahamas on both the Caribbean and Atlantic ocean-sides. A book found in local stores is recommended, "Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera", which rates and describes various beaches, and provides directions on location.

If you are renting the Blue Crab or Pink Hibiscus Cottages on Russell Island, you are directly facing the Atlantic Ocean outside your doorstep. You can directly access the ocean here for swimming or kayaking. The ocean access is flat, but rocky, and we would recommend bringing water shoes for this. However, if you prefer a sandy beach, there are many beaches around the Russell Island and Spanish Wells area to enjoy.

FISHING & BOATING:

Fishing & Charter Guides are available in Eleuthera & Spanish Wells area. References available upon request.
Also there are marinas & boat rentals available for fishing & exploring in both areas:
Hatchet Bay Marina (4 miles north of Rainbow Bay); ph 242-332-0186
Spanish Wells Marina (Spanish Wells); ph 242-333-4255;
Spanish Wells Marina & Hardware, 242-333-4122

DIVING:

Some of the popular diving spots are Current Cut in North Eleuthera, and Devils Backbone between Spanish Wells and Harbour Island. Here are the local dive store locations:
Clearwater Dive Shop: Governor's Harbour, ph 242-332-2146
Manuel's Dive Station: Spanish Wells; 242-333-4238
Pierre's Dive Shop: The Current, ph 242-335-3284 or 242-335-3208
Romora Bay Club: Harbour Island, ph 242-333-2325
Valentine's Dive Ctr., Harbour Island, ph 242-332-2146

Glass Window Bridge (north of Gregorytown)

This is the narrowest point in the island...a simply breathtaking view where you can see two oceans at once -- the beautiful turquoise waters of the Caribbean on one side of the bridge, and then the deep dark blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean on the opposite side. There is such an awesome contrast of ocean colors here.

Harbour Island day trip

If you are in Rainbow Bay, this would require a 30 minute drive by car north past the North Eleuthera airport, and then a 5 minute ferry to Harbour Island. (if in Spanish Wells, this would be about a 50-minute ferry ride by the Bohengy from Bahamas Ferries). Harbour Island is known as a haven for famous celebrities. You will need to rent a golf cart here to tour the island. Golf cart rentals are available at the dock. Harbour Island is home to the world reknowned Pink Sands beach. There are a couple of restaurants (such as Angela Starfish and the Deli) and souvenir shops to visit.

Spanish Wells day trip

Just like the Harbour Island trip, if you're traveling from Rainbow Bay, this would require a 30 minute drive north (about 28 miles away). You would continue on north past the North Eleuthera gas station toward the Gene's Bay ferry dock and then board the ferry for a 5-minute ride. When you arrive to Spanish Wells you will find a beautiful fishing village with uniquely pastel painted homes and fine architecture. You would need to rent a golf cart for the day to tour the island. Golf cart rentals can be found near the ferry dock. While driving around Spanish Wells, you will no doubt pass the beautiful cemetary where there is an abundance of floral bouquets. Spanish Wells also has a Museum on Main St.

Restaurants

There are restaurants with delicious local Bahamian, American & Italian cuisine. There are local delis and bakeries around the island of Eleuthera. For authentic Bahamian BBQ, Our Caretakers Brenda & Billy Stubbs host a wonderful bbq in James Cistern, Under the Tamarind Tree, Fridays and Saturdays, (weather permitting) from 11am-3pm. Here’s the link for their delicious BBQ.

Souvenir Shopping

Island souvenir stores are located in Spanish Wells, Harbour Island, Gregory Town and Governor’s Harbor. ***Note Eleuthera is not a shopping mecca. Dress is casual. This island does not have any casinos. This is a laid-back Bahamas out island with a purpose of "relaxation" in mind. Eleuthera Bahamas is a great island for those who love palm trees and beaches. You'll find that most locals of Eleuthera are very friendly and helpful tourist guides. For Eleuthera things to do ... relax. You'll think of something.
